One of the world's most scenic approaches. Common Frequency Zone airspace.
Overview
Milford Sound is a short sealed strip at the head of the fiord, surrounded by towering terrain. It uses a Common Frequency Zone (CFZ) to manage the intense scenic traffic. A DOC landing permit is required.

Local Procedures
- CFZ: Mandatory broadcasts and standard arrival/departure corridors.
- One-way valley traffic: All aircraft follow the published corridor.
- DOC landing permit required.
- Pilot briefing: Pilots without Milford experience in the last six months need a briefing.
- No fuel available.
- Peak traffic: 1000-1600 local, with 240+ daily movements in summer.
- Landing lights and strobes: Required throughout the Fiordland CFZ.
- Overflights: 5,000 ft or above.
- Homer Tunnel restricted area NZR701: Up to 8,000 ft.
Hazards
- Extreme terrain.
- Heavy scenic traffic.
- Weather can close the valley in minutes.
Recommended Approaches
- Visual 11: Over the fiord, straight-in.
- Visual 29: Teardrop approach up the Cleddau Valley (afternoon sea breezes). Better go-around option than 11.
