Glacier Approaches
Franz Josef and Fox glacier valleys - helicopter and fixed-wing scenic corridors on the West Coast.
Overview
The Franz Josef and Fox glaciers descend from the Southern Alps almost to sea level on the West Coast. Their valleys are the most popular scenic corridors in the country and are flown by helicopter and fixed-wing operations daily.
Glacier Approaches
Route
- Depart Hokitika (NZHK) or the glacier fields directly.
- Track south along the coast past Whataroa.
- Turn inland into the Waiho Valley for Franz Josef, or the Fox Valley for Fox Glacier.
- Climb into the glacier valley to view the icefall.
- Optional glacier landing (helicopters only) - check conditions.
Reporting Points
- Hokitika - coastal departure.
- Whataroa - coastal township, continue south toward the glacier valleys.
- Franz Josef township - tourist hub, helicopter base.
- Fox Glacier township - southern glacier base.
- Glacier terminal faces - the icefall viewpoints.
Minimum Altitudes
- 2,000 ft AGL minimum over national park land.
- Maintain at least 3,000 ft in the vicinity of Fox township. Avoid overflying the town where possible (noise abatement).
- Over non-park land, standard low-flying rules apply (500 ft AGL over non-congested areas, 1,000 ft over congested areas).
- For glacier landings: check current snow/ice conditions and DO NOT land without proper training.
Frequencies
| Service | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Hokitika CTAF | 119.1 |
| Southern Alps MBZ | 118.6 |
| Area / Mountain radio | 130.6 (Todo: verify - not confirmed) |
Hazards
- Katabatic winds - cold air flows down the glaciers and can produce sudden downdrafts.
- Glacier surfaces are unstable - never land on a glacier without special training.
- Heavy helicopter traffic in summer.
- Rapid cloud build-up - the valleys can close in minutes.
Tips
- Do not commit to a valley unless you have a clear escape route back out.
- Monitor 118.6 for other operators’ position reports.
- If weather is marginal, stay coastal and view the glaciers from the seaward end.
